Digipak
Throughout the making of the digipak album cover I have tried to incorporate the theme of split personalities mainly focusing on illnesses such as schizophrenia to incorporate the theme of the split personality band. I have tried to carry no this theme throughout the album art by using photos of the different types of girl in the music video and utilising photoshops ability to invert pictures to give a more sombre feel to the piece. I feel that my digipak artwork is very typical of this genre, after researching different types of album artworks I have found that most of them use solemn themes to show their genre. As you can see the digipak helps to show the difference between the characters in my music video, the juxtaposition between the two characters can clearly be seen through the different photoshop techniques which combine both sides of the characters to show that they are the same.
My digipak uses quite a few different conventions for digipaks, firstly the use of institutions on the spine of the digipak allows the audience to know who produced the album as well as knowing the name of the band and album before seeing the front cover. In my digipak, I have used the form of a four-frame digipak starter so that my digipak consists of 4 panels including: a front cover, a back cover, an inside cover and the disk tray. This is quite common for digipaks as it reduces the amount it costs to make them as well as making it easier to store as it takes up less space. If I were to have multiple CDs I would use either a 6-frame digipak or an 8-frame digipak to allow more space for CDs and more artwork. I have also added the institution logo onto the back and front of my digipak to promote my producing company with a ‘parental guidance’ logo which fits in with most of the heavy metal genre albums that are released.
Creating both a digipak and a digipak poster have allowed me to develop the connection between my music video and my artist design. I find that by using the characters from the song it gives people an idea of what the album is based on, if they watched the music video before buying the album, it also creates an idea of a tease for the audience. By using pictures and hints in my digipak poster I have been able to create a piece which would draw people’s attention to my digipak and create a sense of hype for the album if the posters were released prior to the album.
With my digipak, I think that I challenged the general conventions of artwork, in the digipaks that I researched I saw a lot of hand drawn pictures related to songs with only a few pictures involved as the scribbling technique fits the heavy metal genre quite well. Also, I think that by using just photos for all the sections of the digipak it creates a more personal feel with the artist. This shows the artists lots which would help to boost publicity and popularity throughout the music world.
