Music Video

I have developed my music video to use a mixture of narrative and performance aspects throughout the video. The narrative aspects of my video promote an illustrative theme with some disjuncture for certain characters and ideas. The performance part of my song was shot through several different characters who turn into the singer instead of creating a band to have to film. This is different compared to some music videos which only use one of the three mainframes to create their music video.

My music video resonates with the uses and gratifications model in terms of the audience is active and the video is used for escapism and identification. I also tried to use Andrew Goodwin’s theory in which the audience is a voyeur and that close ups are important to help the audience appreciate the star persona of the lead singer.

My music video challenges the stereotypical views of a heavy metal video, in most of these videos there are lots of group performance shots showing cloe ups of the different memebers of the band for the audience. In my music video I have only used shots of the characters singing rather than trying to get a whole band to film on the same day, I feel like this is a better way to show music videos as it gives more chances to add montages and leit motifs to the video to make it more entertaining and exciting to watch.

Throughout the preperation of this music video I hav etried to follow Vsevolod Pudovkin’s rules for film making and editing which include:

Contrast: Contrast forces the viewer to compare two opposing scenes in their mind.

Parallelism: Parallelism is often used to jump from one time period or a location to another.

Symbolism: Visual or auditory representation of another object. The use of one object or action (a symbol) to represent or suggest something else.

Simultaneity: Action occurring at the same time in two different locations, the camera will cut away from one action to another action, which can suggest the simultaneity of these two actions but this is not always the case.

Leitmotif: Repetition. Visual Leitmotif’s (leading motifs or guiding motifs) is a theme, or other coherent idea, repeated to associate with a particular idea, person or situation. It is a technique that accompanies the reappearance of a person, object or situation. Clearly defined so as to retain its identity if modified on subsequent appearances, and whose purpose is to represent or symbolize a person, object, place, idea, and state of mind, supernatural force or any other ingredient in a dramatic work.

I feel that in my music video I have managed to use some aspects of leit motif which help to create jumpcuts to separate the different singers. Also the use of contrast between my characters in the video help the audience to see the two different sides of the song. Something that I could have developed more would be parallelism which I believe would suit this genre more as the cuts form different shots could show different narrative aspects. The use of symbolism and simultaneity are scarce throughout my music video, this woud be something that I woud want to work on if I were to continue to make this video with different shots.

I believe that my music video challenges the normal conventions of music videos that are released in todays music stream. I say this first because of the genre used but also for the different editing shots and skills which were applied to the film. I find that in modern music videos the performance aspects take over the entire video with the artists just showing off themselves and the things they do or own. My video challenges this with vitually no props added to the lip-syncing section and cutaways to the narrative aspects of the music video for intrest.
